Story of Justice: Mara Escapes an Abusive Husband
Background
Mara* urgently needed to move out of Broward County to escape an abusive husband. As part of the escape, she required a quick update to some previously executed legal documents, including her Designation of Healthcare Surrogate and her Last Will and Testament.
Legal Assistance
As time was of the essence, Mara contacted Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) for assistance with these documents. Although she was not able to physically go to the LAS office due to safety reasons regarding her family situation and COVID pandemic restrictions, a Legal Aid attorney updated all of her previously executed documents remotely and email them to Mara on the same day of her request.
Why it Matters
With instructions provided, Mara executed the updated documents safely on her own, replacing her soon-to-be-ex-husband with family members she trusted with her important medical and financial decisions. Mara also received a referral to Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida’s (CCLA) Family Law unit which assisted her in filing for divorce pro se. Since Mara was in the process of moving out of Broward County, she was referred to the local legal aid services provider where she could resume the legal assistance she needed once she relocated.
